History

Carolinas Laparoscopic and Advanced Surgery Program (CLASP) was established by Dr. B. Todd Heniford in 1998. CLASP combines talented medical professionals and minimally invasive surgical techniques to improve the outcome of patients with disorders of the intestine, spine, solid organs, heart and others. The program is nationally recognized and is committed to patient care, quality research, measurement of clinical and economic outcomes and promotion of education. They pioneer new surgical techniques in minimally invasive surgery, along with ground-breaking studies and education methods.

In an effort to better evaluate and track the quality-of-life (QOL) for patients undergoing hernia surgery, CLASP physicians developed and patented the Carolinas Comfort Scale® (CCS)—an assessment now being used all over the world. The wide spread adoption of the CCS has lead to CLASP’s most recent innovation, the Carolinas Equation for Quality of Life (CeQOL). This application predicts the incidence of chronic pain following inguinal hernia repair. Users simply answer 19 simple questions about their demographic, clinical and QOL status and a risk score for having pain one year following surgery is generated and interpreted. CeQOL has been independently tested and found to be accurate and reliable.

Their CLASP surgeons, recipients of numerous prestigious awards, have literally written the book on minimally invasive surgery. In fact, physicians who want to specialize in these techniques come to us for mentoring and advanced training. Their surgeons have taught more than 2000 physicians in the United States and around the world. By pioneering new techniques and studying the best educational methods, CLASP continues to offer cutting-edge courses that benefit both patients and the medical community.
