History

Our emergency medicine residency is a four-year, ACGME-accredited training program located at Henry Ford Jackson Hospital in Jackson, Michigan, formerly known as Henry Ford Allegiance Health. Our hospital has 420 inpatient beds, and our emergency department sees volumes of around 90,000 patients annually. The ED is home to 60 beds, with a designated secure unit for psychiatric patients. As the only acute care hospital in Jackson County, Henry Ford Jackson is designated as a Level II trauma center and Primary Stroke Center, with a cardiac catheterization lab and CT perfusion imaging capabilities. Henry Ford Jackson also provides various inpatient and outpatient specialty services to the outlying communities, including neurology, orthopedics, psychiatry, pain management, and addiction treatment. Due to our large catchment area (essentially all of Jackson County), we see a broad variety of patients and pathology. From local college students, to inmates from the nearby state prison, to out-of-state vacationers from Florida, we see it all.

The EM program consists of 32 residents, with 8 per year. Henry Ford Jackson Hospital is also home to several other residencies: general surgery, family medicine, internal medicine, psychiatry, and a transitional year program. With few exceptions (e.g. trauma activations), we are essentially unopposed when it comes to doing major ED procedures such as intubations, central lines, and chest tubes. As our home base is a Level II trauma center, our residents gain valuable experience in admitting patients to the inpatient floors as well as arranging EMTALA-compliant transfers to tertiary care centers such as the University of Michigan. Clinical education is augmented with external rotations at Sparrow Hospital (Lansing, MI) or DMC Children's Hospital of Michigan (Detroit, MI) for pediatric emergency medicine and PICU rotations, and Hurley Medical Center (Flint, MI) for trauma exposure, particularly of the penetrating variety.

Our residency is a part of Michigan State University's Statewide Campus System and we participate in didactic sessions with other EM residencies across the state of Michigan, including lectures and hands- on instruction. Henry Ford Jackson also hosts a dedicated simulation center with high-fidelity training mannequins and simulation labs throughout the year. Didactics are held weekly on Wednesday mornings and include a mix of resident case lectures, oral boards review, and topical and multidisciplinary lectures from physicians, ancillary staff (e.g. respiratory therapists, SANE nurses), and even alumni. Moonlighting is allowed during 3rd and 4th years at the discretion of the program director, conditional on satisfactory performance on the annual ABEM In-training Examination (ITE). The residency also hosts four longitudinal specialty learning tracks including EMS, Sports Medicine, Ultrasound, and Wilderness Medicine for interested residents.

Graduates from the Henry Ford Jackson EM program have gone on to a diverse array of positions, including emergency medicine fellowships and private-practice attending roles throughout the United States. Our graduates' strong reputation in the EM job market stems from a combination of our alumni network as well as our relationship with Independent Emergency Physicians, the private, physician-owned group that employs our core faculty who staff Henry Ford Jackson’s emergency department. As residents, our inclusion in IEP's business meetings allow us to gain valuable exposure and insight into the realities of the administrative, operational, and business aspects of emergency medicine and running an emergency department.
