History

The Department of Emergency Medicine at Oregon Health & Science University was established as an interdepartmental division in June 1977, becoming the third U.S. medical school to establish an independent academic emergency medicine program. Since then the Department of Emergency Medicine has experienced remarkable growth in its faculty and programs, receiving full departmental status in April 1992.

The Department of Emergency Medicine has always been deeply committed to the training of emergency medicine residents. The Emergency Medicine Residency Program, originated in 1978, is a fully accredited, three-year program that accepts 11 residents per year at the EM-I level.

Training Locations

Primary Hospital

Oregon Health Science University Hospital Located on Marquam Hill the university hospital is the "mothership". We have a 32 bed ED with capacity to flex with hallway beds and surge overflow areas. We have access to all services 24hrs a day including a full suite of radiology services. We see a mix of community patients, vulnerable unhoused as well as very complex patients who are taken care of by our excellent specialist services.

OHSU recently partnered with the Phil Knight cancer institute to create the state's leading cancer research and treatment facility located on the South Portland waterfront. We are a level 1 Trauma centre and a Falls Center of Excellence. We have unfortunately seen a rise in penetrating trauma as the city is starting to see more gun violence. So residents are gettin an opportunity to manage these critically unwell patients more frequently.
