Administration

Adult Dosing

  • Bacterial eye infection: 1-2 drops in affected eye q2h or 0.5inch of ointment q3-4h
  • Acne: apply 10% lotion BID
  • Bacterial skin infection, seborrhea: wash affected areas with wash BID

Pediatric Dosing

  • >2mo, ophthalmic: same as adult dose
  • >12yo, topical/skin: same as adult dose

  • Allergy to class/drug

Adverse Reactions

Serious

  • SJS/TEN
  • Agranulocytosis, aplastic anemia
  • Hepatic necrosis

  • Application site irritation

Mechanism of Action

  • Bacteriostatic sulfonamide antibiotic: inhibits utilization of para-aminobenzoic acid and inhibits synthesis of bacterial dihydrofolic acid
