We are currently recruiting Resident Editors from accredited Emergency Medicine residency programs. Contact Drs. Allen Bookatz <ztakooba@gmail.com> and Dan Ostermayer <dan@wikem.org> if you would like to be the Resident Editor for your program.
Information About the Resident Editor Program
Emergency Medicine Residents,
We would like to let you know about a great opportunity to become a leader through an awesome iphone/android app called WikEM. Many of you may have already heard of it; in case you haven't -- it is a completely free EM oriented point of care mobile device application to assist you in your daily musings in the ED (eg. thoracentesis labs checklist, landmarks for nerve blocks, Splinting details, Peds vitals, vasoactive drips, differentials for various complaints, and so much more).
Like Wikipedia, the more people who edit = the stronger the database. There is already a lot of good information on the application.
It's easy to sign up for a login and easy to edit, just try it out. http://www.wikem.org/wiki/Main_Page
Use it while you study with your browser open to the WikEM site to see what is available right at your fingertips in the ED. If you find something that could use more information or updating just add it. People from around the world are updating it all the time, and the more you familiarize yourself with the content and editing the better you will be at accessing all of the greatness it has to offer. Interested in global health? I just had a classmate in Haiti manage a patient with ICH using WikEM. Also there is a new Tropical Medicine section recently added.
While anybody can edit WikEM, some folks may be extra interested in taking a lead with significant additions/editing, expansion to other programs, QI/QA process, or programming---If this describes you, then read on!
We are looking for Resident Editors to help lead the way to this awesome reference.
The qualifications and expectations are:
- R1 or greater in an Emergency Medicine program.
- Be in good standing in your residency
- Willing to contribute new posts/improvements on a regular basis.
- No programming/editing experience necessary
- Commit to 1 year

- Create a WikEm account
- Read Updating and Creating Notes on WikEM and Browse the following for how to learn the formatting Basic Editing, and Advanced Editing
- Start with initial commitment of 25 edits, check out Helping Out on WikEM for ideas (this page will be updated frequently) and post on the Discussion page for questions you may have.
- Want credit for your hard work? We have WikEM Elective Guidelines for your program director
- Track your work through the Recent Changes page, find your name and click "contribs" to view all your edits
- Once you have 25 edits please email me to let me know and you will obtain a Provisional Editor Status
- We use a "currency" of sorts called WikEm editor units to keep track of edits in a useful manner. These are based on the WikEm elective guidelines.
- 1 WikEM editor unit (1 week of Wikem elective) = 15 updates or 5 new notes, or combo. Super minor edits consisting solely of spelling corrections, formatting changes, or rearrangement of text without modification of content do not count toward this.
- After 15 WikEm Editor Units are obtained, Junior Resident Contributor Status is awarded.
- After 30 WikEm Editor Units are obtained, Senior Resident Contributor Status awarded.
We will be updating the editor units concept to incorporate the new contributor score to make it easier to track progress It looks great on a CV.
