Committee of Interns and Residents (CIR)

History

The Committee of Interns and Residents (CIR) is the largest housestaff union in the United States, representing more than 15,000 residents. CIR was founded in 1957 by interns and residents in New York City’s public hospitals. In May 1997, CIR affiliated with the two-million member Service Employees International Union (SEIU).

Mission

CIR empowers our nation’s interns, residents and fellows to fight for excellence for our patients, our training and our healthcare system through organizing, collective bargaining and advocacy.

Structure and Governance

  • CIR is a democratically resident run union with the following structure:
    • House of Delegates: Elected annually by residents at each hospital comprises the governing body of CIR
    • Executive Committee:
      • President, Executive, Vice President, Secretary-Treasurer elected by the entire CIR membership
      • Regional Vice Presidents elected by members in their respective regions
