FDP
Background
- Fibrin degradation products; fragments produced when plasmin breaks down fibrin clots
- Includes D-dimer as a specific FDP
Normal Values
- Normal: <10 mcg/mL
Interpretation
- Elevated in DIC, DVT/PE, trauma, surgery, liver disease, malignancy
- Part of the DIC workup: elevated FDPs with low fibrinogen, low platelets, and prolonged PT/PTT
- D-dimer has largely replaced FDPs in clinical practice due to greater specificity
