FDP

Background

  • Fibrin degradation products; fragments produced when plasmin breaks down fibrin clots
  • Includes D-dimer as a specific FDP

Normal Values

  • Normal: <10 mcg/mL

Interpretation

  • Elevated in DIC, DVT/PE, trauma, surgery, liver disease, malignancy
  • Part of the DIC workup: elevated FDPs with low fibrinogen, low platelets, and prolonged PT/PTT
  • D-dimer has largely replaced FDPs in clinical practice due to greater specificity
