Background
- Glomerular filtration rate; estimated (eGFR) from creatinine using CKD-EPI equation
- Best single measure of overall kidney function
Normal Values
- Normal: >90 mL/min/1.73m2
- Mild decrease: 60-89
- Moderate decrease: 30-59
- Severe decrease: 15-29
- Kidney failure: <15
Interpretation
- eGFR is less reliable in acute settings (based on steady-state creatinine)
- May overestimate function in elderly, malnourished, or low-muscle-mass patients
- Important for drug dosing adjustments (e.g., enoxaparin, gabapentin, renally cleared medications)
- CKD staging is based on eGFR: Stage 3 = 30-59, Stage 4 = 15-29, Stage 5 = <15
