Retrobulbar hemorrhage

Background

  • Most often due to blunt trauma
  • Can cause loss of vision due to abrupt increase in intraocular pressure

Clinical Features

  1. Pain
  2. Proptosis
  3. Decreasing vision

Diagnosis

  1. Tonometry
    1. Only measure once globe rupture has been ruled-out
  2. CT Orbit

Differential Diagnosis

Periorbital swelling

Proptosis

No proptosis

Lid Complications

Other

Treatment

  1. Emergent ophto consultation
  2. Consider lateral Canthotomy if IOP >40
